Annual Ku-ring-gai Charity Golf day
This is a major activity for our club. We typically raise around $10,000 for a selected charity. In 1996, our inaugural year, we donated a digital telephone system to Lifeline, based in Gordon. This enables them to service calls for help from all over Australia. In 1997 we donated a Hart Walker. This is a device which enables children suffering from cerebral palsy to walk - something everyone of us takes for granted! In 1999 we donated $10,000 to the Sir Eric Woodward school in St Ives. This enabled the school to build sensory facilities for severely disabled children. In 2000 our beneficiary was the Maternity Unit of Ku-ring-gai Hospital. In 1998 and from 2001 to 2009 we ran the Golf day for Telstra Child Flight, the emergency helicopter service that assists young children and infants across New South Wales. The 2010 Golf day will be held at Gordon Golf Club on Wednesday 27th October. Contact Reg Wallin

Prisoners help give gift of Sight.
The inmates at Silverwater Corrective Services Work Centre, Sydney have just completed the grading of fifty thousand glasses, to be distributed in Thailand.

Ku-ring-gai Community Service Awards.
For the past twelve years, since 1999, we have made awards to volunteers in the Ku-ring-gai area who have delivered outstanding service in one of the fields of Community, Sport, Aged, Youth, Disabled, Cultural Integration, Arts, Environment and Education. From 1999 to 2009, the awards were presented each year by the club's patron, Dr Brendan Nelson. The 2010 awards were presented on 14th July at a Black tie dinner by our local Federal member, Paul Fletcher, attended by almost 100 members, supporters and guests.

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital Spring Fair.
Each year we run a stand at this fair, helping to raise funds for the Hospital. We usually seem to sell sausages in a roll - typically a few hundred.

Barbeques at Bunnings Warehouse.
Early in 2006 the club was invited by Bunnings Warehouse, Artarmon to run a Sausage sizzle twice a month. This project has become an excellent fund raiser and also provides outstanding public relations for our club.

Swain Gardens and Wombin Reserve
The Lions Club of Ku-ring-gai has for 18 years worked in these gardens as well as supported the sub-committee reporting to Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council. Prior to this sub-committee taking on the task of restoration, the gardens were dreadfully neglected, having been largely ignored by the National Trust. Today the original creator - Mick Swain would be truly proud of the results of his original foresight and our hard work. If you haven't visited the Swain Gardens - pop along to Ku-ring-gai's secret garden, in Stanhope Road, Killara. Once a year we hold an open day - complete with Scottish piper, Devonshire teas and a range of plants for sale.

Lions Christmas Cakes
We are one of the bigger sellers of Lions Cakes across Australia. We make very little money out of this, unfortunately, and it is as lot of work. We only keep it up because this seems to be traditional - people expect to find a Lions cake at Christmas.

Lions Mints
We have mint outlets all over Ku-ring-gai. These sales enable us to fund many worthwhile projects.

Youth of the Year
Youths of 17 and over are eligible to take part in this program. Competition is fierce, as participants must exhibit excellent public speaking skills, great personality as well as showing the extent to which they have participated in community support activities. The experience for those lucky enough to take part is tremendrous, and it is quite amazing to see the transformation over a few months. The lucky winner gets an all expenses paid overseas trip, while the State winners get to trip around Australia. The winner of the Youth of the Year in 1997 was Andrew Charlton, of Knox Grammar, sponsored by this club. Rico Jedrzejczyk, also of Knox Grammar, also sponsored by this club was the National YOUTH WINNER for 2000.

In the 2006 competition, Nat Ware from Barker college won the State Final and competed against 5 other State finalists at the National Final on the Gold Coast in May 2006. The National winner was Shane Robertson from Warnambool College in Victoria.

In 2009 Jack Coles from Knox Grammar made it through to the District Final held at Bankstown in April and in 2010 Jack Clifford from Knox Grammar made it through to the Region Final.

Any students currently in Year 11 are encouraged to participate in this prestigious Quest. For further details contact Derek Howell

Youth Exchange
Youths of 17 and over are eligible to take part in our exchange program. They are accompanied on the overseas trips, and hosted by Lion families in their chosen country. The trip lasts about two months, and is a great experience. For further details contact Derek Howell

Riding for the disabled:
Each year we raise funds to buy small Christmas presents for the disabled children who take part in this therapeutic activity.

The club also assists at the annual Model Railway exhibition at Frenchs Forest, providing food and drinks and collected the entry fees. This very popular event is held at the beginning of March every year.

Rural Fire Services and SES:
The club has recently donated much needed training equipment for the Ku-ring-gai/Hornsby division of the Rural Fire service in preparation for the forthcoming bushfire season and have also purchased equipment for the local SES rescue services.

The Shed
A new Men's shed is currently being established at St Ives Showground and the Lions club has recently donated substantial funds towards the construction and fitout of The Shed. The Shed will provide retired people who no longer have their own home workshops, a facility where they can still carry out woodworking hobbies.

Where does the money go?
The vast majority of our projects are for pre-determined charities - i.e. we can tell you what we are raising funds for at the time. We prefer to support local needs - those in Ku-ring-gai and Sydney, in preference to further afield. As a part of Lions International we support many world wide projects, but this is not a large percentage of our total donations but we also support many world wide Lions Clubs International Foundations.

There is nothing so satisfying as a completed project
